Administrative History The first University unit, raised in 1885, was a battery of the 1st Aberdeen Volunteer Royal Artillery but became part of the 1st Heavy Battery in 1895. However, an Aberdeen University detachment of the 1st Volunteer Battalion, the Gordon Highlanders, was recruited in 1897 and in 1898 became a University Company ('U' Company). In 1908, following the introduction of the Territorial Force under the Haldane Scheme, the 1st Volunteer Battalion became known as the 4th Battalion, The Gordon Highlanders. The current Corps was officially established at the University in 1912 and administered by the newly formed Military Education Committee (MEC). In 2012 they celebrated their 100th anniversary.
